collection of Dick Makse

The photographer in this turn-of-the-20th century postcard perhaps did not know at the time that he was literally standing on the right of way of the Canajoharie & Catskill. The bridge at Mill Street was undoubtedly the second generation crossing of Thorp Creek. (The creek flows down from the heights at Point Lookout in East Windham to its confluence with Catskill Creek east of the Hay Press). The right of way of the C&C crossed Mill Street in old Winansville at grade at the photographer's heels and cuts across the creek at a diagonal on the left side of the postcard. The west abutment of the bridge would align with the front door of today's (2002) O'Grady's Sports Bar and follow the slope of the hill on an embankment to Henry Hedge's Farm a mile away. The private house at the center of the postcard still stands.
